This permanent AO7 position is a specified one (i.e. Applicants are required to nominate an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person who is recognised and accepted within the community as a referee to support their ability to meet the key responsibilities).
This position is involved in developing and supporting community based mediation services in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It currently has two main responsibilities:
- The current principal responsibility is to provide intensive on ground support to the local Mediation Coordinator in the management and delivery of the Aurukun Restorative Justice Project (ARJP) including its mediation service. The Aurukun Community Justice Group is funded to deliver this project and employs the Mediation Coordinator. This will involve living in Aurukun for extended periods of 4 to 12 weeks. This project is managed by the Courts Innovation Program.
- The other key responsibility is the Mornington Island Restorative Justice (MIRJ) Project which involves supporting the Junkuri Laka justice group on Mornington Island in its more established mediation service. This involves ongoing monitoring and three community visits per year. This project is supervised by the Dispute Resolution Branch.
Induction will include spending a month in Aurukun.
