International Women’s Day, 8th March

This year the International Women’s Day theme is ‘Make It Happen’. Many events are being held around Australia today to celebrate women’s achievements. Claire Holland, an Associate Lecturer in the JCU Master of Mediation and Conflict Resolution, attended an International Women’s Day breakfast this morning with a theme of ‘Beijing +20: Let’s not wait another 20 years for gender equality.’

The guest speaker Ms Irene Santiago is a peace negotiator and women’s rights advocate and was the Executive Director the NGO Forum World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 that consisted of the largest international gathering of women in history. Irene has also served on the Philippine government panel negotiating with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which makes her one of the few women globally with experience in formal peace negotiations.
